Is your webcam not working? Here is a quick and easy checklist
Is your webcam showing a black screen, not detected, or just refusing to turn on? In this video, I walk you through the quickest and easiest fixes to get your webcam working again — whether you're using Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, or recording videos.
This checklist is perfect for beginners and covers the most common causes of webcam issues.
Quick checks (1–2 minutes)
- [ ] Restart the app using the camera (close it fully, then reopen).
- [ ] Restart the computer.
- [ ] Unplug/replug the webcam (or dock/USB hub) and try a different USB port.
- [ ] Check the lens/slider: remove any cover, privacy shutter, tape, or case obstruction.
- [ ] Confirm the right camera is selected in the app’s camera/video settings.
- [ ] Test in another app (e.g., Camera app / browser test / Zoom/Teams) to isolate whether it’s app-specific.
Privacy & permissions
- [ ] OS camera permission: ensure camera access is allowed for the app.
- Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera
- macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera
- [ ] Browser permission (if using web): allow camera for the site; remove any blocked permission.
- [ ] Physical camera privacy switch (some laptops): toggle it off/on.
App conflicts & background usage
- [ ] Close other apps that may be using the camera (Zoom/Teams/Meet/Skype/OBS/Camera app).
- [ ] End stuck processes (Task Manager / Activity Monitor) for camera/video apps.
- [ ] Disable virtual camera sources temporarily (OBS Virtual Camera, Snap Camera, etc.) and select the real device.
Device & connection checks
- [ ] If using a USB webcam:
- [ ] Try a different cable (if detachable) and avoid long/cheap extenders.
- [ ] Bypass the USB hub/dock and connect directly.
- [ ] Try USB-A vs USB-C adapter/different port.
- [ ] Try on a different computer to confirm whether the webcam itself is faulty.
